Walk 1 (extracts from Okçular Book)

1½-2 hrs circular walk (approx 4800mts) EASY.

. . . over the bridge the track swings immediately right with buildings on your right and a track joining on the left (Reference Point A), from here onwards you are walking on the original trackway from Dalyan to Ortaca that runs around the base of the mountains just above the line of the winter flood-waters in the days before the drainage canal was dug to alleviate this annual problem.

. . . during the winter months the low-lying area to the right of the track becomes a shallow, seasonal lake known to locals as Kara Göl or Black Lake.

. . . from the tree continue along the track, you will notice the remains of several buildings. At the next clearing (about 150mts.) bear very slightly left and find your way through the hedging that appears after another 50-60mts. In front of you now are two unoccupied cottages in fairly intact condition. If they are not locked up it is acceptable to look inside. . .

. . . archaeologists have found evidence of ancient graves, walls and terraces here . . .

. . . where there are wonderful views of the village with Lake Köyceğiz in the distance and on your left the entrance to Kocadere Valley. When your eyes have feasted . . .

‘I have visited the area many times and find something new each time.

. . . it is possible to find more bio-diversity in a single square kilometre than in any area 100 times larger in northern parts of Europe.

. . . recognised as one of 18 world ‘hotspots’ where exceptional concentrations of bio-diversity occur.

Turkey alone has over 10,000 species of flowering plants of which 35% are endemic.’
